Basically a wifi printer has a built in wireless network card, just like all the laptops that come out today. This allows it to connect the wireless network in your home or office. I know it doesn't sound that earth shattering but this little piece of added functionality in a printer can make a big difference in terms of convenience, ease of use and installation.
There are tons of benefits of using a wireless printer over a regular printer that you connect to your computer via USB and even network printers that plug in to your network with Ethernet cable.
For starters, anyone connected to your wireless network can print to it, so up to hundreds of computers can print using your single wifi printer. Sure a network printer can be used by many people as well but they are usually a lot harder to setup with more cabling involved, in some cases going through floors and walls. They are also bigger and harder to move.
Because other printers require cables you are constrained in where you can position your printer, especially with USB printers where they must be very close to a computer to connect to it. With Wifi Printers you can position them where ever you want, all you need is a power outlet. Wireless printers also have the benefit being incredibly easy to set up and use. It is a bit different depending on the specific printer but usually you just need to press a network configuration button on the printer, choose your network out of the wireless networks within range, enter in you password and encryption (if applicable) then the printer will connect to the network. After this just use the CD that came with the printer to install it on your computer.
Wireless Printers aren't even appreciably more expensive than regular printers, you can get one new for around $70 on amazon. There are many regular printers that are more expensive than that. Some of the top rated Wifi printers are the Lexmark X4650 for $72.95 and the Brother MTC-490CW which is a bit more expensive at $118.90 but has the added functionality of a built in fax machine.
In many houses the average setup is there are 2-4 computers or laptops accessing the internet through a wireless router. However, only one computer will have a printer plugged in and if you want to print then that is the one you must use. If you made a document on a different computer you will need to transfer it over with USB or email. Using a wireless printer you can avoid that hassle and allow all the computers in the network to share the same printer.
If you are on the internet, then the odds are good that you already have a wireless network because of how widespread they have become. Most workplaces will also have a wireless network set up. So the next time you need to get a new printer, go for the added convenience and functionality of a Wifi printer.
